                  pregnancy

'I'd suffered from lower back pain and was always worried that the problem would recur. When I became pregnant I wanted to minimise the strain on my back so I had 20 lessons before giving birth to Rachel.
The benefits for me so far have included a greater self-awareness of the best way to carry myself, which has helped me to relax and be better able to reduce tension in my body when I can feel it. It helped ensure that I carried the extra weight in the  most efficient way and I had no back pain at all during pregnancy, or any other negative symptoms!
I gained a lot of insight into what was happening with my body as the pregnancy progressed and really good advice about how best to sleep for comfort and the baby's well-being. Ann and my partner and I discussed and practised positions for labour that would help me cope with the contractions and ensure that the baby's birth was as smooth as possible. This really helped me understand what active birth meant and was much more in depth than anything that happened in the ante-natal classes. The principles of lifting, standing, bending to pick objects up and carrying a load have all been very useful since having Rachel.'   (Vivien)

'Every time I left the early sessions with Ann I felt very  light and very calm. Gradually, as the weeks progressed, I experienced this more frequently in everyday situations. Since my early lessons I haven't had backache and I'm now 39 weeks pregnant. The lessons have given me specific time each week to focus on my changing body and the effects on my movement.
I became more aware not only of how the Technique can be applied to everyday activities but also how it fitted in with what midwives recommend you do in labour, but went much further. It's given me the opportunity to take greater responsibility for my pregnancy rather than accept that pregnancy would bring problems and movement restrictions. Now I've written my birth plan, which involves various movements and techniques learnt during my lessons with Ann. I'm hoping this will give me greater control over labour. It has certainly given me more confidence in myself and how I will cope in the coming weeks.'    (Ruth)
